Brief History

The classification of Lao can be that it is part of the Tai group of languages that fall under the sider Tai-Kadai language family.

The Tai languages that Lao originates from areas of Southern China and Northern Vietnam. In fact, there are close relatives of the language still spoken in some of these areas. A variety of reasons are attributed to the Tai people moving south, towards, or even as far as, the Malay peninsula – ultimately going in the direction of India and taking in a route that was along the Mekong River valley. The legend of Khun Borom has seen the preservation of the oral history that can be connect to the migrations.
